Density

The density of a foam is synonymous with quality and durability

This measurement is expressed in lb/ft³ and represents the weight of a 1 ft³ block of foam. For example, if 1 ft³ weighs 1.8/lb; its density will be 1.8 lb/ft³.

The higher the density, the longer the foam will retain its initial properties and load-bearing capacity before softening or collapsing. However, it will cost more to produce. A denser foam therefore means quality and should last much longer.

Regular mousses

The density of regular foams used in industry is between
1.0 and 2.5 lb/ft³:
  • Low : 1.0 1.11.21.31.4
  • Average : 1.5 1.71.8
  • High : 2.1 2.5

HR foams

HR foams have a density of 2.1 to 3.0 lb/ft³. HR foams are more elastic and generally have a better ability to return to their original shape than regular foams. They have the ability to return the pressure exerted by the body weight to return to their original position.

Memory foams

Memory foams range in density from 1.5 to 8.0 lb/ft³. They are by far the most expensive foams to produce, but also the most comfortable on the market.

Compression

Compression indicates whether a foam is soft or firm.

This measurement, expressed in lb/50 in², gives the measurement of compression. It is obtained by calculating the weight required to compress the foam by 40% of its initial height.

The higher the compression index, the firmer the foam is said to be. It is also linked to density, because for a foam of a given density there are several possible compressions.

The compression of HR foams used in industry is between 19 and 75 lb/50in²,

Memory foams

The compression of memory foams used in the industry is between 10 and 14 lbs/50 in². This is the best type of foam for pressure relief, but it cannot be used alone, it must be combined with a support foam.
