Summer is slowly coming, but that doesn't stop the trees from growing. 2,000 new trees have just been planted in the Saint-Hyacinthe region and this is just the beginning!
As part of Tree and Forest Month, a great group of volunteers from the Citizens' Committee for the Protection of the Maskoutain Environment (CCCPEM), as well as the Matelas bleu.eco team, organized a big tree planting event.
This gesture is highly significant. Indeed, we are witnessing an international movement aimed at increasing the canopy of cities and countrysides. Acting on tree cover improves the environment, health and quality of life of residents, while offering an economically viable response to climate change.
Trees ensure our well-being and environmental quality, while forming an effective biological infrastructure to respond to multiple crises simultaneously. They help reduce ambient heat and the incidence of heat islands, capture pollution and capture rainwater before it clogs municipal drains. They also contribute to the appreciation of land values.
In short, the more trees we plant, the more we improve our lot and that of the planet. It is a practical solution, relatively easy to achieve and generating social synergy.
Remember this name, Arbres.eco. The project was born from the initiative of the company Bleu.eco and a group of volunteers from Maskoutains who are very committed to the environment. We're thinking big! Here's what we want to do:
-
Arbre.eco organizes planting events, planned with cities, farmers and private estates. To mark the occasion, two planting periods per year are planned: one in May during Tree Week and another in October.
-
The trees are subsidized by bleu.eco, companies and individuals who want to do their part by offsetting their greenhouse gas emissions. We keep the costs low ($4/tree), because the goal is to plant thousands of trees!
-
The trees are planted by volunteers and community organizations (interested? Contact us! We'll take all the help we can get to launch this great project).
-
A portion of the donations collected is given to community organizations that plant trees with their volunteers. The project is therefore also a good way to fundraise for these organizations (it's better than selling chocolate bars!).
Finally, let's remember that Matelas bleu.eco has committed, for each mattress sold, to plant 3 trees in order to contribute to a cleaner and more ecological future. The company is now thinking much bigger. By sponsoring Arbres.eco in its early days, the Maskoutaine mattress company will ultimately help dozens of Quebec citizens and businesses to do their part.
Arbres.eco is on its way to becoming a recognized NPO and will put its website online in the coming weeks. Follow us on the adventure!
